Troubleshooting - Scanfob® 2005, 2002 Bluetooth Laser Barcode Scanner

General Scanfob® 2005, 2002 issues

Symptom: The Scanfob® 2005,2002 scanner will not emit a laser when pressing the scanning button.

Possible Reason Solution
The Scanfob® 2005/2 battery is drained. The Scanfob® 2005/2 must be charged before use. Connect to a powered USB port for about 4 hours.
The Scanfob®

2005/2 needs to be reset.

See the section below on unexpected scanner behavior.

Symptom: Pressing the small function button on the Scanfob® 2005/2 does not toggle the on-screen keyboard on my iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.

Possible Reason Solution
The active cursor is not in a text area. The cursor in the iOS device must be in a typable text area. Tap on the screen in a text area to show the cursor and keyboard.
The keyboard toggle feature is not enabled.

Scan the barcode located on the setup document labeled Enable iOS Keyboard Toggle. Once enabled, press the small function button on the Scanfob® to toggle the iOS keyboard.

The Scanfob® 2005/2 requires a firmware update.

If the Enable iOS Keyboard Toggle barcode cannot be scanned, the Scanfob® may require a firmware update.

Please contact SerialIO technical support regarding a firmware update for your Scanfob® 2005/2.

Symptom: When I try to scan a barcode, I aim the laser beam at the barcode, but no data appears on my screen, the scanner does not beep, and the laser eventually turns off.

Possible Reason Solution
The Scanfob® 2005/2 is too close or too far from the barcode, or at an incorrect angle. Try scanning at different distances and angles so that you can become accustomed to the most effective position. We recommend a distance of 2-10 inches and at a 60° angle.
The barcode is incorrectly formatted, damaged, or poorly printed.

Try scanning other barcodes that are correctly formatted, printed clearly, and are in good condition.

The Scanfob® 2005/2 has an exceptional scan engine that by default only accepts UPC codes that are printed to the UPC specification.
Print and scan this barcode to allow UPC codes that are printed out-of-specification.

The Scanfob® 2005/2 needs to be reset.

See the section below on unexpected scanner behavior.

The Scanfob® 2005/2 needs to be reset. See the section below on unexpected scanner behavior.

Symptom: After scanning a barcode, odd behaviors occur, such as different functions being invoked in my application, or special unexpected characters are displayed in the application.

Possible Reason Solution
Because the Scanfob® 2005/2 in HID mode emulates a Bluetooth keyboard, only characters that can be found on a keyboard are accessible.
  • Disable the Scanfob® 2005/2 prefix character.
Download and print the prefix/suffix character setup document.
Scan the barcodes in the box labeled "Remove prefix character (will send only data)".

  • Verify that the barcode that you're scanning does not contain any non-printable characters. If supported on your computer/device, use the Scanfob® in SPP mode to scan non-printable ASCII characters.

Various Symptoms:

  • The blue LED on the Scanfob® blinks endlessly.
  • The laser beam will not scan a properly formatted and printed barcode.
  • The laser beam is not emitted from the scanner when I use the scan button.
