Note on using configuring the built-in serial port on the Zaurus SL-6000 for Terminal mode ROM images 0.64.

Setting the Zarus in INIT 4 mode.

When a Zaurus SL-6000 is booted, it will by default will boot in 'INIT 5' mode "(ttyS0:-Free-)". If you wish to connect to the SL-6000 using the built-in I/O connector (e.g. with a ZThinCable RS-232), the SL-6000 will need to be booted in 'INIT 4' mode "(ttyS0:terminal)". This will start a getty daemon running on the serial port (/dev/ttyS0).

1) Use the stylus to push the reset button the back of the SL-6000.

2) Slide open the keypad cover to display the keypad

3) Power on the Zaurus (read the next step first, as there is only a short window for action)

4) During the boot process you will see messages like

INIT: version 2.78 booting (x): Qtopia
INIT: Entering runlevel: 5

These messages will be followed by a 'Wait...' message displayed followed by a number that decrements from 5. Before the number decrements to 0, press the '/?' key on the keypad. This will display the following menu

q (x): Qtopia
a (e): Linux Console
r (e): init 4 (ttyS0:terminal)
t (e): init 5 (ttyS0:-free-)
Input Key =>

5) Press the 'R' key on the keypad. The device will boot in INIT 4 mode with the serial port configured for SerialPort (free from the getty daemon). Note: this must done only when the device is soft reset. i.e. powering down the Zaurus will not affect the INIT setting.

Note: To enable programmatic control (for example with programs like JeTermZ or applications built with SerialPort) reset the Zaurus in default INIT 5 mode.
